I Find Your Lack of Consistency Invalid

Perk up your ears and open your eyes: seek ye out the inconsistent! For this post, please recognize and document one instance each of real-life inconsistency and invalidity. Transcribe your examples exactly, post them, and explain why they are as you say. Please preserve the anonymity of your sources. These posts are due by 8 am on Thursday 9/18.

  1. Invalid argument: See Ally before practice starts, so if practice starts at 4, you should go see her at 4:30

Inconsistent/ contradictory statement: "Y'all need to speak ah real English aroun' meh" She says in a thick dialect

Inconsistent Statement: "Yoooooooo, you have blue eyes too, hashtag twinses" -brown eyed person

  3. Invalid Argument: "Please hand the worksheet in after class today, then review it for tomorrow's quiz."

Inconsistent Statement: "I have a riding lesson today at 4:30pm-5:30pm, I will go to the art building with you around 5:00pm."

  4. Invalid argument: On the phone, they said: "Let me know by Sunday morning if you want me to come on Saturday or not"
Inconsistent/contradictory statement: "You only need to read pages 17-23. Make sure that pay special attention when you read page 24." -Teacher

  5. Invalid Argument: "Check in ends at 7:15, so you have to check in by 7:30."

Inconsistent Statement: "I literally can't run up this hill!" says the girl as she runs up the hill.

  6. Invalid Statement: I have study hall D period. My friend has Spanish D period. She says to me, "Oh look, we have identical schedules!"
This statement is invalid because the friend (whether mistakenly or not) has drawn a false conclusion from two true premises. Another way to think about this is that if the conclusion were to be true, (if we did have identical schedules) the two premises could not also be true and coexist with her conclusion, therefore the statement is invalid.

Inconsistent statement: Teacher says, "The essay is due before the start of class, but I'll give you time to work on them during class and then you'll submit them."
There is a contradiction/inconsistency in this statement regarding the timing when the essay is due. At first, the teacher says the essay will be due before class starts; next, the teacher says he will give them a chance to work on them during that class period and then they will be submitted at the end of class.

  7. Invalid Argument: You must put all your works away and take a break since you are very sick today. Make sure you do at least one reading passage for SAT today. -Mother

Inconsistent Statement: I am so full and I feel like I can't eat anything. I really want a beef steak and a piece of pizza now.

  8. Invalid Argument: If you haven’t noticed I’m not big on homework...Remember to finish the worksheets that I emailed you and complete the lab by tomorrow

This argument is invalid because the teacher claims to not enjoy giving out homework to students, but then proceeds to remind us to complete a lab and worksheets for class the next day, which is homework.

Inconsistent Statement: I got hit by a ball [today] and got a bruise about a week ago, week ago.

This statement is inconsistent because this person is saying that although they got hit by a ball today they got a bruise from it a week prior to getting hit by the ball. As if her body sensed that it would be hit by a ball in that spot a week earlier and decided to get the bruising out of the way. She also was not talking about a previous encounter with a ball.

  9. Invalid Argument: "There is no explicit wrong way to figure-8 a bridle." *proceeds to figure-8 the example bridle* "This is the correct way to figure-8 a bridle, and the way most people do it is damaging to the tack, therefore in your exams you must do it this way or you will fail."
Inconsistent statement: Teacher:"This is a very hard aspect of the topic to try and argue, especially since most of the evidence points the other way..." Student: "Well, I was planning on changing my thesis anyway and not arguing that." Teacher: "Oh no! you should definitely argue this! It's very interesting and you can use these examples here here and here."

  10. Invalid Argument: "The breakfast here is so good but, I don't eat it because I don't like it."

Inconsistent Statement: "This game killed me." Said by someone who is still alive

  11. Inconsistent statement #2: Teacher in class: "For homework find two examples of inconsistent statements and one invalid argument." Later posts: "please recognize and document one instance each of real-life inconsistency and invalidity."

  12. Inconsistent Statement: Right now, my cat and dog are equally cute. Right now, my dog is cuter than my cat. (Written during a Chinese quiz)

This is an inconsistent statement because it is not possible for me to believe that my cat and dog are equally cute and that my dog is cuter than my cat at the same time (unless I had split personality which I sincerely hope I do not).

Invalid Argument: "Bulgaria lost even more land during the second Balkan War than they originally had during the first Balkan War. The two maps below show the difference in Bulgaria's size during both wars. Oh, Bulgaria looks larger during the second war according to this map..." (Teacher)

This is an invalid argument for the conclusion does not follow the premises. The premises state that Bulgaria lost more land during the second Balkan war and that the two maps show that change, but the two maps show the opposite.

  13. "He's black, we all know he's into that thug stuff" Inconsistent because the two are not related
"I have to get to breakfast check in this morning. I can't get to breakfast today because I need to sleep." Invalid because premise + conclusion don't match

  14. Inconsistent statement - "Your Extended Essay should be planned out in advance of the summer after junior year. Start thinking about what you'd like to write about in the fall term of senior year." Inconsistent because the two directions contradict each other.
Invalid argument - "Aristotle was brilliant. I think he's pretty stupid."
